This feature is taken from our Autumn schedule.

They say don’t work with children or animals, but this ‘they’ are not aware of the 405’s obsession for all things cat-related.

For our brand new photo feature series, we’re setting up photoshoots with musicians and their feline companions. So what better way to begin than with passionate cat fans Labyrinth Ear – Emily even draws pictures of her and Tom’s cats (which are included in the gallery below). Also be sure to check out their Instagram, which is pretty cat-centric.

Tim Boddy was on hand for the dramatic shoot that began in the living room – however two of the cats got rather camera shy and did not want to be there…

…Following this a neighbourhood stray cat, and a total beast of a cat, Tigger, we saw at the bus stop outside the house. Such is Tigger’s prowess he thought it fine to start on a dog at the bus stop – the owner here attempting to make peace between the two…

…The feisty feline tired of this dual and decided to strut into the house – he’s a regular to many houses in the ‘hood…

…However this is where things got even more tense. Labyrinth Ear’s cats had moved on to the garden for the second part of the photoshoot, and the presence of unwanted Tigger caused their cats to go into full attack mode like so:

…And while these two images may not look that intense – any cat owner will tell you that the body language is one of a deeply strained scenario…

Please introduce your cats to The 405…

Mitzy, Lulu, Amber and Cyril.

I didn’t get to choose Mitzy’s name, she was a rescue cat. I did think about changing but as I was coming up with incredibly cool names, I mentioned her name in a conversation and she looked at me and walked towards me, then I realised, she knows and recognises her name, so I have no right to change it, same with Lulu’s name. Amber I chose, because she had Amber flecks in her fur. Cyril my dad chose. My dad’s really good and picking cat names.

When did you get your cats and how would you describe your relationship? with them?

We got Mitzy around 2010. We have a mutual understanding. I sing to her, she doesn’t scratch me, we communicate telepathically. Very proud of how far she has come.

We got Lulu around 2008. She’s an independent little thing, but she loves attention and affection, got lots of respect for Lulu, Lulu is from Ladbroke Grove.

Cyril and Amber are Lulu’s son and daughter. Our relationship is good, they’re both very well behaved and very fun to be around. They’re so lovely. I am really their big sister.

What are their favourite toys?

A little hessian mouse on a string, but Mitzy will play with most things: a banana skin, or some tissue, or a button. The only thing she doesn’t like is a toy owl puppet I have. I think she thinks it’s a real owl!

Do you think your cats like your music?

I don’t think, I KNOW! We don’t release anything without running it past Mitzy first, she has final say, one blink is meh, two blinks is YES, no blinks is no… we’ve shelved whole albums because of this.

Have your cats shown any musical talent?

Lulu used to like running across the piano keys.

If your cats were famous jazz musicians, who would they be?

I think maybe Cyril would be Artie Shaw.

Mitzy might be Bessie Smith.

Do your cats have any special skills?

Amber can stand up for a good amount of time, and Lulu can open doors.

How many mice have your cats “presented” you with?

We lived in the countryside for a few months a few years ago, and Mitzy started a shrew massacre! It was unreal, probably around 10 shrews… Had to leave because of it; those poor poor shrews.

What is your favourite celebrity cat (real or fictional)?

I love Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I’m so glad he’s real.

Lastly, what do you have coming up (non-cat related) that we should know about?

We have a gig on the 14th of November at Autumn Street Studios be there or be square.
